What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 113 active cannabinoid chemicals in the hemp plant. Although CBD is the second most widespread active ingredient in cannabis (or marijuana), it is actually derived from the hemp plant.   Hemp can be considered a cousin to the marijuana plant, and is in the marijuana family. CBD, unlike THC, does not produce euphoria or intoxication. CBD targets specific receptors in brain cells and the body.  There are both physical and mental benefits with the use of CBD. It is known to help relieve different types of chronic pain, stress, anxiety and sleep disorders.

How Our Body Reacts to CBD

We as humans, including animals, have cannabinoid receptors (CB receptors) and an endocannabinoid system (eCBs) which processes them. Our endocanabinoid system is a network of neurotransmitters that works to achieve balance. It essentially sends messages to all your body parts to confirm that everything is working.  If it finds a problem, it will control the situation by messaging your receptors to adjust how your body feels. The two main receptors in our eCBs are receptors CB1 and CB2.

CB receptors are message receivers. They wait on specific neurotransmitters so to bind to them. Depending on the type of cell the receptor is on, the effect will rapidly impact immunity, sensation or mood.

  • CB1 receptors are essential for a healthy functioning brain and are one of the most common receptors in the entire nervous system.

  • CB2 receptors are most often found on the cells of our immune system. They help moderate inflammation and our immune response to pathogens.

CBD does not actually fit in either receptor, so instead of binding to the receptor it provides stimulation creating indirect actions. These indirect actions include activating other receptors that work to control important functions like pain perception, body temperature, and inflammation. CBD is also know to increase the amount of anandamide in the body. Known as the “bliss molecule,” anandamide plays a role in the neural generation of pleasure and motivation.
